Early / Phase I Treatment
Orthodontic Phase I treatment, often referred to as interceptive orthodontics, is a proactive approach to orthodontic care typically administered to children between the ages of 7 and 11. It aims to address dental and skeletal discrepancies in the early stages of development, potentially minimizing the severity of orthodontic issues in the future. Some examples are overcrowding, crossbites, underbites, overbites, and jaw discrepancies that are typically seen during phase I treatment. Orthodontic appliance such as expanders, space maintainers, partial braces, or removable appliances may be used to guide tooth and jaw growth into more favorable positions. It may also focus on correcting functional issues such as improper bite alignment or habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, which can impact dental and skeletal development. This treatment may last from 6-12 months depending upon the complexity of the case.
